Ingredients of Vazhakkai(Raw banana) poriyal

  1. You need 1 of Vazhakkai (Raw Banana)(after chopping comes to 1 cup roughly.

  2. Prepare 1 of Big Onion medium sized chopped.

  3. Prepare 2.5 tbsp of Coconut.

  4. It’s 1/4 tsp of Turmeric powder.

  5. You need to taste of Salt.

  6. It’s of To Temper:.

  7. Prepare 2 tsp of Oil.

  8. It’s 1 tsp of Mustard seeds.

  9. Prepare 1/8 tsp of Hing.

  10. Prepare 1/2 tsp of Jeera.

  11. You need 1 of Garlic whole.

  12. Prepare 1/2 tsp of Urad Dal.

  13. You need leaves of Few curry.

Note - As raw plantain might cause stomach discomfort for some people, I have added hing and ginger.

Usually we make vazhakkai poriyal for keerai sambar using this way.

But recently my MIL made vazhakkai curry aka poriyal using freshly ground spices.

We prepared this as a side dish for mor kuzhambu & Pulisaaru(Vendhaya rasam).

Vazhakkai(Raw banana) poriyal instructions

  1. Peel off the skin of raw banana and cut them into bite sized pieces.Boil water and add the chopped pieces into it along with little salt and turmeric powder.Cook until the veggie turns soft.Dont drain water..

  2. Keep the cooked veggie aside.Heat oil in a  pan – add the items listed under ‘to temper’ let it splutter.Then add onion and saute till it turns transparent..

  3. Then add cooked vazhakkai, required salt and give a stir. Keep closed and cook for 2 mins. Add coconut, give a quick stir and switch off..

This vazhakkai poriyal is a simple side dish for rice, made with freshly ground spices.

The freshly ground powder does the magic to this Vazhakkai Poriyal.
