  1. It’s 6 pieces of bhetki fish.

  2. You need 3 of potatoes cut into two halves.

  3. You need 1 cup of cauliflower chopped.

  4. It’s 1 tablespoon of ginger paste.

  5. Prepare 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder.

  6. You need 1 of bayleaf.

  7. You need 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds.

  10. It’s 1.5 teaspoon of red chilli powder.

  15. It’s 1 teaspoon of garam masala powder.

  16. It’s 1 teaspoon of ghee.

  17. You need 1/2 cup of coriander leaves.

  18. Prepare to taste of Salt.

  19. It’s as required of Mustard oil.

Curry cut: Meat is chopped into small pieces which are ready to cook, either for preparing curry or to be fried.

Whole Cleaned: Scales removed or Skin-out as appropriate.

The Barramundi fish is a species of catadromous fish in family Latidae.

It is also called as Asian sea bass, Pla kapong, Chonak, Bhetki, Barramundi perch, Giant sea perch, Lates calcarifer, Koral fish etc.

Bhetki (Barramundi) fish curry step by step

  1. Marinate the fish with half of the turmeric powder and salt..

  2. Heat some mustard oil and deep fry the fishes. Keep them aside..

  3. In the same wok, add more oil if required. Add the potatoes and cauliflower. Add the rest of the turmeric and some salt. Fry them well. Keep them aside..

  4. Add the cumin seeds, bayleaf, cloves, cardamom and cinnamon. Let them splutter..

  5. Add the tomato puree and cook it for a while..

  6. Add some turmeric powder, ginger paste, cumin powder, red chilli powder and fry them very well till the oil separates..

  7. Add the fried potatoes and cauliflower. Fry them very well..

  8. Add some water for the gravy, some salt and the sugar to balance the salt..

  9. Bring it to boil. After you get the desired consistency of the gravy, add the fishes..

  10. Add the garam masala powder and ghee and the coriander leaves..

  11. Mix them well and remove it from the flame..

  12. Serve hot..

Bhetki Mach er Kalia/Spicy Barramundi Fish Curry.

Doi Bhetki is a mildly spiced flavourful Bengali fish curry, where fish pieces cooked in a yogurt based gravy.

I made this fish curry with Rohu (Rui) fish previously The bhetki fish pieces are marinated in spiced mustard paste, wrapped in banana leaf individually, then slow cooked till tender to make Macher Paturi Recipe.

Generally we Bengalis make paturi using Ilish (hilsa fish), Bhetki (Barramundi fish) and chingri (prawn).
