Bhetki fish in Mustard gravy. Mustered Bhetki is a Bengali dish, which enhances the taste of mustard seeds and mustard oil, It makes the gravy delicious. You can make it with prawn, any other fish or chicken, the mashala will be same and it will be equally yummy. Bhetki or Vetki is a catadromous fish ,a fish or machh called in bengali which migrates from river to sea for breeding.

Bengali Sorshe baata diye macher jhaal or fish in Bengali mustard gravy / sauce is perhaps one of the most iconic dish in Bengali cuisine.

Though this dish would be a common everyday affair in most of the Bengali homes, but what makes it so unique and distinctive is the use of fresh mustard paste.

Bhetki Macher Paturi is a signature Bengali fish dish where Bhetki Maach is wrapped in Banana leaf with a paste of Mustard & Coconut & cooked in slow flame.

You can have Bhetki fish in Mustard gravy using 8 ingredients and 3 steps. Here is how you achieve that.

Ingredients of Bhetki fish in Mustard gravy

  1. Prepare 3 of bhetki fish.

  2. You need 3 tbsp of mustard paste.

  3. It’s 1 tsp of turmeric powder.

  4. You need 1 tsp of salt.

  5. You need 2 of green chillies.

  6. You need 1 tsp of sugar.

  7. You need As required of Mustard oil for cooking.

  8. It’s 1/2 tsp of ginger paste.

I took some Gourd leaves yesterday from Market and wrapped half of the fishes in Banana Leaves and rest in guard leaves.

Add the fried fish pieces to the pan and boil till the gravy thicken and oil starts floating on the top.

Sprinkle chopped cilantro on the top and serve with steamed rice.

I started to cook fish and try to look beyond my usual Fish Fry.

Bhetki fish in Mustard gravy instructions

  1. Marinate the fish with pinch of salt and turmeric and just fry for a minute on each side..

  2. In a pan, heat 1 tbsp mustard oil. Add the ginger paste and saute for a minute. Then add the mustard paste, salt, turmeric, green chillies and sugar. Give it a good mix and let simmer for 4-5 minutes. Add the fish and drizzles 1 tsp mustard oil from the top..

  3. Add 1/2 cup water to adjust the gravy consistency and cover and cook on low for 3-4 minutes. Your dish is ready to be served..

This fish curry I made with my sister recipe, she gave me a bottle of whole yellow mustard seeds and recipe to use the mustard in different recipe.

In a bowl take onion paste, ginger - garlic paste, red chilli powder, black chilli powder, curd, coriander leaves, mustard oil and salt and mix them together.
