Brinjal Semi Gravy(tamarind thokku). Here's another easy recipe for brinjal Gravy or commonly known as ENNA KATHIRIKAI. I simply loved the gravy and its tastes with the nuttiness of the sesame and the creaminess of the poppy seeds. This is pretty much a very common dish in all andhra households, but then I wanted my own spin to it.

Here's a fantastic side dish recipe that goes perfectly with any Biryani.

This tangy and sweet gravy along with the perfectly chunky brinjal pieces makes a perfect Sunday Lunch.

This style is popular in most of the Bangalore Restaurant and pairs.

Ingredients of Brinjal Semi Gravy(tamarind thokku)

  1. Prepare of brinjal.

  2. You need of onion.

  3. It’s of tomato.

  4. It’s of green chillies.

  5. You need of mustard and urad dal for tempering.

  6. Prepare of cumin seed.

  7. Prepare of curry leaves.

  8. You need of oil.

  9. Prepare of cumin powder.

  10. Prepare of turmeric powder.

  11. It’s of red chilli powder.

  12. You need of tamarind juice.

  13. It’s of Salt.

Adding tamarind water was my own twist to aunty's recipe.

Since I was serving the gravy with plain rice for lunch I felt that adding tamarind water will give a lovely tangier taste.

This brinjal gravy recipe i got from a very good friend of mine which they used to call as "Kathrikkai Puli illa Kuzhambhu", which means Brinjal gravy without tamarind.

For a person like me who hates to extract tamarind juice, this type of gravies are really most welcome.

Brinjal Semi Gravy(tamarind thokku) instructions

  1. Heat oil in a cooker and add mustard seed,urad dal, cumin seed and curry leaves for tempering.

  2. Then add chopped onions and green chillies, saute and cook for 3 -5 minutes..

  3. And add tomatoes, cook till it becomes mushy and add diced brinjal. Give it a quick stir..

  4. Then add cumin powder, turmeric powder,salt and red chilli powder. Mix everything together..

  5. Finally add tamarind juice and close the cooker and wait till it sounds 3 whistles..

I use home made tamarind paste which works so well and makes for one chore less.

This brinjal gravy for biryani has many names like brinjal chops, biryani kathrikkai or brinjal thokku/curry.

I have tasted it long time back and could not wait to try it when I found a similar version here.
