Thotakura pappu, a Andhra cuisine, is simple delicious dal recipe. Amaranth leaves tur dal is easy to make and tasty.

In Andhra amaranth leaves are called as Thotakura and Pappu is called as dal.

Serve the Thotakura Pappu Recipe with steamed rice, Andhra Style Kakarakaya Vepudu Recipe to make it a complete meal.

Thotakura aka amaranth leaves are available in Vizag almost all year round and regular at our home.

You can cook Thottakoora Pappu (Andhra Style Dal With Amaranth Leaves) using 16 ingredients and 9 steps. Here is how you cook it.

Ingredients of Thottakoora Pappu (Andhra Style Dal With Amaranth Leaves)

  1. You need of Toordal.

  2. It’s of Turmeric Powder.

  3. It’s of Ghee.

  4. Prepare of Amaranth Leaves.

  5. It’s of Oil.

  6. Prepare of Mustard.

  7. It’s of Asafoetida Powder.

  8. You need of Curry Leaves.

  9. Prepare of Fenugreek Seeds.

  10. You need of Green Chilli(Slit Vertically).

  11. Prepare of Grated Ginger.

  12. Prepare of Sambar Powder.

  13. It’s of Tomatoes(Finely Chopped).

  14. You need of Lemon Size Tamarind.

Thotakoora or Thotakura Pappu or Amaranth Greens with Lentils.

Thotakura (aka Maath) or Amaranth is one of my favourite leafy vegetables.

Thotakura is available in two types; Red (Laal maath or Yerra Thotakoora) or Green (Safed Maath or Thotakoora).

I made this dish with thotakura/ amaranth greens that I harvested from my little container garden, took pictures and after a very emotional and whirlwind India trip completely forgot about it.

Thottakoora Pappu (Andhra Style Dal With Amaranth Leaves) step by step

  1. Soak the tamarind in hot water for 15 mins. Extract thick pulp. Discard the fiber. Set aside..

  2. Pressure cook the toordal with 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp ghee and 3 cups of water for 3 to 4 whistles or till it becomes soft..

  3. Add the greens & 1 cup water and pressure cook for 1 whistle and set aside..

  4. Heat oil. Splutter mustard seeds. Add hing, curry leaves, fenugreek seeds, ginger and green chilli. Saute..

  5. Now add the finely chopped tomatoes, sambar powder, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, tamarind pulp and salt..

  6. Cook till the oil separates..

  7. Add this to the cooked dal & greens mixture and cook on low flame for 5 mins..

  8. Top with ghee..

  9. Offer Thottakoora Pappu along with Steamed Rice or Chappati to Lord Sri Krishna and honor Krishna Prasadam..
