I had phyllo dough that had been in the freezer for a while and was starting to dry out, so I decided to make this recipe.

Even though it was quite difficult to work with dried out dough, the end result was fabulous.

Flaky & crispy on top with yummy sweet layers in the middle.

Ingredients of Homemade Baklava

  1. You need 250 g of strudel dough or 16 layers phyllo pastry.

  2. Prepare 125 g of unsalted butter, melted.

  3. Prepare 1/2 cup of pecans.

  4. Prepare 1/2 cup of macadamia.

  5. It’s 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, ground.

  6. You need of Syrup.

  7. It’s 1 cup of sugar.

  8. It’s 3/4 cups of water.

  9. You need 2 tablespoons of lemon juice.

  10. It’s 1/2 of honey.

Baklava is yummy…but it's yummiest when it's homemade.

And it doesn't have to be my home that makes it.

I just think homemade baklava tends to have a little more flavor…a little more freshness…a little more somethin' somethin' than a lot of the baklava you buy.

Many ethnic festivals are held in my city throughout the year.

Homemade Baklava step by step

  1. In a pot add the syrup ingredients which is sugar, water, lemon juice and honey. Heat until sugar is dissolved. Turn off heat and let cool down..

  2. Chop nuts (pecans and macadamia) finely and mix with ground cinnamon.

  3. Preheat oven to 160°C. In a oven proof dish spread a layer of unsalted butter, lay a sheet of strudel or phylly pastry, spread butter again. Do this for 5 layers. Add a layer of nut mixture (third of the nut mixture).

  4. Add 3 layers of strudel or phyllo pastry with butter between each layer. Add another layer of nut mixture. Repeat one more time..

  5. Last layer should be like first layer with 5 strudel or phyllo pastry sheets. Butter between each layer..

  6. Cut into squares right to the bottom of the dish..

  7. Bake in 160°C oven for 1 hour 15 minutes or until top layer is golden brown..

  8. Remove from oven, let cool slightly. Pour syrup over baklava..

  9. Enjoy with a cup of tea!.

The recipe uses phyllo dough, which is not difficult to work with.
