Boil moong dal with haldi and 2 spoons ghee in the cooker for 8 whistles..

Once the dal is boiled, pour some oil into a frying pan. Add some jeera and let it pop. Add chopped ginger, garlic and chillies. Saute lightly..

Add the boiled moong dal to the frying pan. Add salt to taste..

Add water if too thick. Let it boil for five minutes..

I left out the asafoetida after reading reviews.
I also substituted finely chopped carrot and onion for the tomatoes which I cooked in margarine along with the spices.
